Slow Internet – Break in Fiber link between Australia to Singapore
Are you experiencing slow loading on your web pages outside of the Australasia region? Well its all thanks to the Submarine Fiber Connection that joins Australia with Singapore. Basically this connection is to speed up the data flow between Singapore (and beyond) and Australia.
So before this unfortunate event I was getting around 70 milliseconds in PING between my office and my server in Singapore. Now I’m getting around 220 millisecond PING as it makes its way across Australia to Sydney and then to Singapore.
“Big deal” I hear you say “It still loads doesn’t it?” Well yes, but it is considerably slower and makes normally responsive use, quite “laggy”. Especially for me as I have my Remote Support infrastructure in Singapore.

When did this happen? Sunday 30th November 2014
Why did this happen? The cause is unknown at the moment, but some expect that it is due to either an earthquake or a ship anchor.
How long will it take to fix? Well last time it was laying down there on the ocean floor for 4 months before approval from Indonesia, via permits to work, was given.
What can you do? Unfortunately nothing. All the providers automatically reroute traffic via Sydney instead, so it does work albeit slower.
